<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">These days, each day seems to bring a new application to help us with our genealogical research, a definite plus to all those who are out there looking for those elusive ancestors!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Beginning with Roots Tech and now just finishing up with FGS, each conference brings news of new apps and features that are amazing to those of us who have been researching for years.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Breaking through some of the research barriers can be a matter of just adding seemingly innocent historical events through timelines to be made aware of a new place to locate records or of a new record set completely. Twile did this in its run as part of the "Innovator Showdown" in February. However, it continues to be a great tool to anyone at any point in their genealogical/family history research. Whether you are starting in the present or working in history, their unique way of adding in the historical is perfect for all generations. Their sample video is amazing!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The FamilySearch Family Tree application comes in 10 different languages! A couple of the features are:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">View information about the ancestor, including the names and dates of the ancestor’s spouse; children; parents; and brothers and sisters; and important events, such as birth, marriage, and death

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">View the photos and stories that are in Family Tree

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If you are concentrating on pictures and stories, the "<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Memories" application by FamilySearch will keep you connected to FamilySearch Family Tree and allow you to interact and add those favorite stories and photos to share whenever the opportunity is there.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We will continue to bring you more information on these and other great new tools to aid your genealogical/family history research!

As more and more enthusiasm for Family History/Genealogy develops, more and more individuals are taking advantage of all the wonderful tools, online databases and records to learn about their own family history. This is indeed a great and wonderful thing! Where do you keep your family information?

There are online programs where you can place your family tree as well as various software programs that also provide your family history on your own computer, which is best for you? We discuss just three here.

Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.com allow you to create an online family tree and add media. If an individual is not a member they can not see the tree. Ancestry.com allows you to also make a tree public or private.

FamilySearch.org FamilyTree allows you to create a tree and add media but because it is a Wiki, others can change what you have entered. You can check a "Watch" box so if someone does change it you would be notified by email,
but it can still be changed.

All the above and others are accessed through the Internet, if it goes down you have "No Access". There are other situations that also happen to prevent access to these precious family records if only in one location.

It is recommend that you work with one of the three many software programs to link and sync your original data to FamilySearch.org so that you always have the correct information for your family on your own computer should there be instances where names, dates and places have been changed.

While it is quick and easy to enter information into FamilySearch, it is worth it to either enter it there and then download it into a software program or enter it into your software program and upload it to FamilySearch. Either way will make it so that you have your own copy of your family history on your own computer.

All 3 programs also create the Family Ordinance Request needed for temple work and many other outstanding features. The three software packages that are completely FamilySearch Certified to do this are:

1) Ancestral Quest 2) Legacy FamilyTree 3) Roots Magic

There are many other different programs that have been certified to work with FamilySearch.org, here is a link to that page: https://familysearch.org/apps/category/tree-software

Conclusion

Seriously consider using a software program for your own use on your own computer and add to the other programs as you wish to share.
One of the quickest things one learns when doing any kind of research is the amount of paper, books, pictures and different types of media that accumulates at a rapid pace. Additionally, keeping them all connected can become a nightmare.

While researchers are diligent at carefully recording and citing sources, being efficient can be overwhelming depending on the particular project.

Starting with the objective of the project/research, a researcher can scan a document if it is not digital, record the location with a proper citation and connect the two together forever while the paper method can easily get lost among the collection of documents as the research project progresses.

Its easy to allow the program to search for previously recorded documents and finds instead of having to manually go through pages and pages of already conducted research. Research Ties greatly helps to prevent duplication of work and effort resulting in increased research time and analysis.

There is plenty of assistance in getting started and using all the features in the program as is indicated under "Learning Center":

Normally when I share thoughts and ideas, I tend to concentrate on more concrete things, however, after reading the book, Finding Family by Richard Hill, I felt it wise to share my thoughts on this book.

This is one of those books that once you start reading it you don't wish to put it down until you have finished, yes, it is that interesting as well as informative in the process of locating ones biological parents under the difficult circumstances of closed records, sealed documents, individuals who were sworn to secrecy combined with those who could have helped having already passed away.

From the moment you begin, the reader brings you right into his life as it was at the point that he discovers he is adopted which happens as he goes for his physical before heading off to college. This is a point in life where he has had time to mature and act in an adult manner. He does this brilliantly as he works through how to handle this shocking and unexpected news with his adoptive parents at this point in his life.

During his 10th grade biology class he learned how parent's DNA recombines in their children and two parents with blue eyes should produce a child with blue eyes, his were brown. His teacher simply stated at the time that he should notice that their text book didn't even go into green or gray eyes and it was just a simple way to help understand DNA which didn't cover mutations and so he brushed it off at the time.

Along the way, individuals and friends in the family aid him in his long journey to discovering who his real parents are, his persistence in keeping detailed notes, which he referred to multiple times over a period of 30 years, made all the difference in his success. The hunt for his mother took less time then the hunt for his father.

His journey begins with following the paper trail but ends up through various DNA testing over time to finally bringing closure to discovering who was his biological father.

Never once does he diminish the roles of the parents that raised him for he understood the difference between biological parents and adoptive parents.

This is definitely worth reading if you wish to learn ways to go about discovering who ones' biological parents are if you are in this situation. Additionally, if you are someone who helps others it is also worth reading.

Its available either from your public library or on multiple sites where you purchase books.

Enjoy!

Understanding how one learns is very helpful no matter what career one decides to pursue, but when introducing younger individuals into the world of genealogy and family history research it becomes an advantage that will inspire and guide the individual teacher to match tasks and abilities successfully.

Most people realize that each one learns differently, according to Learning-styles-online.com, "Everyone has a mix of learning styles...there is no right mix nor are styes fixed. One can develop abilities in less dominant styles as well as improving styles already used".

There are 3 different learning styles: Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic and Tactile. Each way of learning allows an individual to develop the best they can in a perspective field. (1)

Being interested in family history is a like taking a great adventure into the past and never really knowing what to expect! This is actually one of the many things that makes family history so fascinating.

Often discoveries become intriguing and require additional discussions with other family members creating an opportunity to share findings with family and potential family. In the process one can learn more about their family and gain new family members who may know more about your family than anyone realizes. The list of positives when sharing and collaborating is immense when one considers the possibilities.

So just what is "Relative CrowdSourcing"? According to the Merrian-Westers dictionary, "Crowdsourcing is the practice of obtaining needed serves, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community, rather than from traditional employees of suppliers."

I would like to tweak it a little and consider one's extended family the 'crowd' and you are the individual who is asking your extended family for needed information to build your family tree with not just names, dates and places but with stories, pictures and documents. All these things can be done online through many different mediums available today.

There is of course the basic email, but there is also Skype and Google + Hangouts where one can converse face to face as well as chat if necessary. Sharing knowledge gained from others can be done in a family blog or on a family website. Pictures and stories can also be shared through blogs or a family wiki and of course FamilySearch allows you to upload pictures and stories too.

Apps on an Android or an iPhone or tablets make access to these even easier and allow for inter-exchange between multiple people. There are many new and exciting ways to take advantage of the tools already there and to employ new ones. Evernote has added many new features that make it a possible place to store and grow your family tree. Of course there is always Google Drive which can be used to store and share stories and pictures too.

Regardless of the methods used, the main point is to begin and reach out to your extended family and build your Relative Crowdsourcing family who will be there to help you grow your family tree which in essence is also their family tree!

When one begins to do Family History and genealogical research it becomes evident very quickly that this particular endeavor can become overwhelming in connection with the amount of artifacts resulting from each search conducted.

To get a picture of the situation is very easy as one considers all the papers and documents surrounding one's own life today, now multiply that by each ancestor and it is mind boggling to even think of all that there is in one person's life worth keeping and recording.

As the saying goes, every project one takes up begins with that first step and if one has begun, it is a good idea to have a plan to stay organized as much as possible right from the start. Of course, as one also knows this is easier said than actually doing as life tends to get in the way of the best intentions.

There are many organizational systems out there but which one will fit your particular situation?

As a younger individual just beginning perhaps 'simple' is the word to keep in mind. A few file folders and a file holder do not cost very much, there are even some boxes that are the perfect size for hanging folders, either way, color coding and alphabetical and numberical order is most likely the easiest to use.

The main colors are: Blue for the Paternal Grandfather, Green for the Paternal Grandmother, Red for the Materal Grandfather and Yellow for the Maternal Grandmother. On a fan chart it looks like this:

Color folders are available but one could easily just color the tabs on regular file folders if funds are an issue. Keeping the colors like this helps with keeping family lines organized in a multiplicity of ways. Following this on through down to the folders will help greatly as more and more families are added to your color chart remembering to have a folder for each family.

Following this same system on your computer will help you keep your genealogical digital files organized also by creating a folder for each family and keeping all items either scanned or downloaded connected to that family within their family folder.

Whether you are just starting or have been doing research for years, it is a good idea to either begin or stop and start some sort of system before it is beyond impossible. FamilySearch has a very good short video on organization that may be of help also here.

Lastly don't be discouraged if you've been collecting and researching for a length of time and it is already out of control. The best thing is to start and slowly add what you already have done, eventually you will be organized!

As one begins their journey into family history and genealogy, it is inevitable that after exhausting home resources, it will be necessary to reach out to older family members.

Just viewing family photos will most likely reveal cousins, aunts, uncles, grand parents and a growing circle of extended family. Taking time at that point to identify all who are in the photos is critical.

Over the years I have found that memories fade and often those who do remember can pass away leaving behind pictures of unidentified people. To avoid this from happening, take time to label pictures with their proper names. One of the biggest mistakes is to label a picture "Grandpa ...." as to the one now looking at that picture he may be great or great great grandpa ...". While this is a common mistake it can cause some difficulty in establishing their real identity.

Choosing a family member to visit can be intimidating, however, if family members have kept in touch over the years it may not be as difficult as one would think. Sometimes just making a phone call and showing an interest opens up a whole new world of possibilities, but one never knows until they make that first phone call. Most people enjoy sharing stories of their own lives as well as photos and find it an opportunity to build a positive and closer relationship with a younger member of their extended family. All family members have stories to share and while they may be related, each person in a family experiences things differently.

My own mother was the youngest member of her family and when talking to her oldest sister about a family event, each had their own interpretation of the same event and they usually were not the same. Additionally, the oldest sister would know family information that my mother would not know just because she was not there at the time. Each family member can offer different perspectives on everything which is always a good thing.

Ok, you've made the call, set up a time and place to meet with the first of many family members, now what?

It is usually helpful to let them know the reason for your visit and perhaps even provide some things your are interested in learning from them about the family. There are a number of prompts available to help, however, sometimes just having a few questions in mind to get things going is very helpful. To do this list some of things one wants to learn and then put the questions either on paper or type and print them up to take with you. Don't forget to take some sort of recording device as one can never write as fast as one can talk and often stories are shared which makes the visit even more worthwhile and special for all involved.

Possible questions:

1) What is your earliest memory?
2) What is your favorite memory?
3) Tell me about your parents...what kind of work did your father do?
4) What was school like for you?
5) What was your first paying job?

As this new journey begins, remember everything in life begins with just one step at a time, never giving up and going forward. Be sure to share and record new discoveries and additions in some permanent format.

Remember to send a 'Thank You' note to the family member, the message of appreciation will go a long way in future interviews with other family members down the road.

As a past Family History Director for 17 years it always amazed me how there seemed to be "someone" in each family who would take an interest in discovering the roots of that particular family.

Often that person would come in totally lost and even wondering why they were there except they felt an urging to put together a history for an aging family member or they were curious themselves.

So are you that person who will help their family take the leap and learn all there is about their ancestors? Do not let age be a barrier to enriching your life with a sense of who you are!

Once you've made the decision, it is hard to decide where to begin. I teach a class for beginners and one of the most important things to remember is to just start with yourself and work your way backwards. You can begin online or on paper or with a software program, there are many places to get tips, advice and even hand holding help, however, the main thing is to begin with the thought that "I can do this" and let the fun begin.

One of the first places to begin is with your own family, if you've had an opportunity to watch any of the "Who Do You Think You Are" series, the individual always visits with their family members to begin. If you have a baby book or a scrapbook or even a family book you are ahead of it all and can begin to assemble a family chart.

As I look around at all the available resources, I must say that FamilySearch.org has put together a great set of beginning short videos that would be worth while checking out, they are located here: https://familysearch.org/ask/gettingStarted.

Of course there are other places that provide assistance with getting started and perhaps just placing the statement in a Google search engine of "getting started with genealogy" will provide you with the results you are looking for.

Regardless of how or where you begin, just do it. It will end up being one of the most rewarding journeys you take in this life.

Next: Reaching out to other family members...

In my previous post, Building Bridges to the Younger Generations, I discussed how important it is to share photos of ancestors with our children, grandchildren, cousins, and any relatives that will benefit from our hard work as genealogists and family historians.

Remember, age is never a barrier when holding a picture of a family member and sharing how they looked and then taking it to the next step and sharing the stories about that special person. What difference it makes to both the receiver and the giver of the story.

Genealogist and family historians have the best of both worlds when doing research, they learn about how individuals overcame trials or illnesses or how an
ancestor struggled to put themselves through higher education or even having to quit school to help support their family because they lost one of their parents.

Just recently in the news, we learned of World War II veteran, Arch Moor, age 88, received an honorary high school diploma because he received his draft notice in 1943 just as his junior year of school was just finishing. Instead of becoming a senior he joined the military and served faithfully during World War II, his story was written up in The Tennessean. What a great example this is to his descendants, family and friends. His story will be passed down through the generations and its ripple effect of perserverance will definitely make a difference in their lifes.

My own father, Omer J. Brisson, Jr. returned to college after he married my mother in 1950 and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Accounting while raising a young family, his story is here in another blog post about him.

As he did, I, too, was able to return to the acedemic world and complete my Associations, Bachelors and Masters degrees after raising my large family, he definitely inspired me and I would hope that someday I've inspired my descendants with the mottos of "its never too late" and "never give-up".

Ancestors' journals
or passed down stories help all who are able to read or hear them and perhaps can help the reader think better about themselves and realize how wonderful they are as a member of their family. To learn of an ancestor who went through a similar situation can make all the difference in the world to the reader.

Life stories are an important
part of the very fabric of each one's life. This is evidenced by the immense number of stories that have been added to FamilySearch's FamilyTree over the last year.

It's time to share either through a blog like I have with Who Will Tell Their Stories? or create a physical book or even a digital one so that we can pass on to our descendants all the wonderful stories connected with our family.

It's safe to say that genealogical research has been around for centuries, however, those who do research are usually not from the younger generation and yet they are the very ones who would benefit the most from learning about their ancestors. Today great strides have been made in reaching out to these younger generations and it definitely is creating a wonderful opportunity to build a shorter bridge between generations than ever before causing a possible positive ripple effect on all generations going forward!

Each and every person is the descendant of those who have done their best to pass onto their posterity all they were able to do regardless of the physical, psychological or emotional circumstances of their lives.

Living conditions, illnesses, poverty, military service, personal demons, various occupational traits, certain familiar traits, hair color, various abilities to cope under difficult circumstances and a large variety of other traits are buried in each one's DNA waiting for just the right moment to appear in any of one's descendants. New studies have shed great light and hope on just how much DNA is passed on and it effects on those individuals. A recent article entitled Grandma's Experiences Leave a Mark on Your Genes is really worth the read for all the hope is provides the whole human race.

Photos can help one add another connection to a everyone's ancestral past.

Collecting, organizing and sharing these photos with each of ones descendants can help them recognize just where they fit in their family. Did they inherit that red hair from their father's side of the family? Those blue eyes and freckles from the mother and so on. Sharing these precious moments in time is just one of the many wonderful things we can do as genealogists and family historians. Don't wait till it's too late and those ancestral pictures are all part of a collection that will fall to someone who has no clue who the people are once you are no longer here to tell them...share them digitally, in a scrapbook or an photo ancestral chart and help to build shorter bridges between generations!

This year has a been one where many individuals discovered through various news reports just how much of one's online life is no longer as private as they may have once thought.

Most try their best, through settings on specific sites to be private while maintaining some sort of online presence either for their work, family and friends and take precautions of what they put online as well as say online. Knowing that photos as well as anything else shared online may end up where one does not want it can be one way to get the message out and be very careful with your online presence.

Genealogists, like many others, collaborate with other researchers to help solve difficult problems as well as assist and share with one another. In addition, clients, as well as the researcher, need to be able to access their research projects regardless of their physical location. To prevent data loss, precautions have to be taken to have back-ups of one's hard work along with whatever else is worth keeping in a digital format for future use and generations.

Keeping the above in mind, various companies offer storage on their servers for a fee, some offer free services and still others can handle larger organizations. They all have one thing in common and that is the ability to access your information from multiple media types as shown in the image above. These companies also provide reassurance that nothing is loss over time and your data automatically synchronized through the software setups on your main computer.

While these kinds of backups provide for secure and digital safety, what happens to all that data when an individual passes away? Recently this subject came up at the annual conference of the Canadian Bar Association in Saskatoon and these lawyers raised questions about digital data rights after an owner's death and how this is definitely a growing problem that seriously needs addressing, the article is here.

Most written laws don't take into account digital assets. The article not only discusses loved ones digital assets after their death but also digital items like downloaded music and books onto a digital device which really only belongs to the individual who paid for it. Then there are social media sites and many other online activities that could have been part of a loved ones virtual life.

This definitely brings into mind one's online genealogical activities which could include blogs, photos, documents, really anything at all including emails that exchanged genealogical information and perhaps early message boards which were another way to help one another in genealogical research, just for starters.

It's not only time to check 'terms of use' with the locations of one's data but also to make sure one's digital assets are handled correctly legally when we are no longer here by our descendants. More than ever before it is important to share your research, photos and all connected with your genealogy and family history with your living family members. It is definitely a time to bring the subject up for open discussion and perhaps lead to some solutions.
One company that is helping with this Gen-Ark, they are a leader in digital estate scanning and preservation solutions, check them out!

In 1996, the Internet Archive was founded to offer "permanet access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format."

Since their early beginnings of just texts, they now also offer audio, moving images, software and archived web pages. Their collections are vast and their digital acquistions increase daily.

Google books was thought of also in 1996 by their co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, however it wasn't launched until 2002 with the thought of scanning every book in the world. By working with other groups like the Library of Congress's American Memory project, Project Gutenberg and others, they developed various methods to overcome a mutilplicity of hurdles to scan the worlds' books. Regardless of the lawsuits that have slowed their progress, the original plan to bring these resources to all is a marvelous one indeed as many of these books sat on a shelve and were never viewed or noticed and now these resources are being used by many from around the world.

FamilySearch has also been digitizing books out of copyright for a number of years and they are available on their website. There are over 40,000 books and this is being done in conjunction with partner institutions.

The list of groups making books, films, documents and a long list of resources digitally available continues to grow each day and yet there are still many locations where one has to be physically there to take advantage of their digital collections, these are known as proprietary collections and are usually protected by a long list of copyright laws.

For instance, a public library, an archive or any record repository will have various digital collections available for all who visit their facility. This encourages many to visit there and provides those individuals with the ability to locate information quickly through their in-house terminals, unfortunately this leaves all who are unable to get there without access to those digital records and perhaps totally unaware that those records even exist.

Many would argue that making such resources available would decrease the number of individuals who would visit their facility, however, statistics and past releases of digital collections by other groups has proven that just the opposite happens and the repository usually sees an increase in patronage. This is because most repositories have more than just digital collections and individuals become aware of the full scope of all their collections creating an even greater desire to visit.

Many public libraries do provide access from home for some of their online subscription resources through a library card, however, these resources are usually not directly from that library or their in-house collections. Additionally, students who attend universities and college will also have this type of access to aid in completing a number of assignments at that facilities library.

Enter remote access which is currently available for individuals who need to access their home computers from another location or tech support for those helping others with problems on their computers. Some of the companies who are providing this access are in the image below, however, there are likely many other companies that provide this service either for free or for a fee $. Security measures are a high priority for these companies with identity theft being upper most in their minds.

Today, when companies sign contracts with archives, libraries and others to put their digital records online, there often is a clause about remote connections and so these situations would have to be addressed as well as copyright laws, however, this could be a source of revenue for those in-house collections just waiting to be accessed by those who would never be able to visit or by those who are unaware that the records even exist! This comes under the statement of "I don't know what I don't know".

While there are a large number of hurdles, security measures, and reluctance by many, I look forward to the day when I can for a reasonable fee view digital collections that I would never see because I may not be able to visit that repository through some sort of remote access. With that additional knowledge I would most likely need to have someone in that location do physical research through their undigitized collections which would increase their patronage.

Someday...

Just the word Mashups itself can be a bit confusing for some individuals who may not be familiar with the various changes in technology over the last couple of years as they mashup together to create something new and better for the users.

There is evidence of these types of applications right in the palm of one's hand as it holds a smart phone and one glances at the large range of applications so easily accessible at the touch of a finger on a screen.

The same can be said for applications on the internet for many of the genealogists and family historians today. When FindAGrave began in December, 1998, it had no GPS coordinates or special memorial pages and yet today this site has many benefial tools for ancestral seekers everywhere.

Mashups are great as they take two or more great tools and combine to form another new and just as helpful resource. One I thought worth mentioning in my blog is Slideshare.

Slideshare was introduced on the web in October, 2006 as a way for users to upload PowerPoint or Open Office presentationi files and share them online through a You Tube-like interface. Files can be tagged, and comments left by viewers. Each slide has its own permanent URL for reference. SlideShare is clean, fast and functional and supports various copyright claims, including creative commons. Since its inception, it has become the best way to share presentations, documents and professional videos.

Because the Internet allows individuals the opportunity to learn about anything on a specific topic, it is sometimes difficult to create new content that is fresh and yet conveys a specific message. Slideshare can provide access to new ideas created by others which can enhance one's own learnings and/or improve a current presentation.

A search for "Family History" returns over 100,000 results and while not each one will be exactly what one wants or is searching for, there will be something there to help with whatever your project may be at the time. With the recent indexing project going on to get the 1940 US Census up and available for free, for this blog we searched this site for 'census records' and found the following:

To find specific topics you may have to vary the terms, however, the search should prove to be helpful and provide additional information that can help to improve any project one may be working on. Once you have located a presentation, click on it and it brings up all others on that particular subject as follows:

This author has always found additional materials from other's perspectives as a way to enhance and improve one's own knowledge on a specific subject.

The pace to finish indexing the 1940 US Census is phenonmenal and currently beyond anyones original thoughts as to its success!
The opportunity to be part of this community effort and others at hand is open to anyone and it has shown what we can all accomplish when we work together for a common goal.
The efforts of to bring this census online for free has surpassed all expectations. Currently there are over 137,000 volunteers with more individuals signing up daily. In a recent blog post, the FamilySearch CEO, Dennis Brimhall stated that "we now have more volunteers than lived in Albany, New York when the 1940 census was taken."
Some stats from his blog have already been surpassed as we have just had a big push this very weekend entitled "5 Million Record" day which was promoted all over through social media, word of mouth and various emails. This is their posts so far...

If this is any indication it will definitely be an awesome amount of indexing completed!

I know many have participated and it is definitely interesting to see so many from all over the world helping us out!

Some of the places were. Peru, Idaho, Texas, California, Philippines, Utah, Brazil, North Carolina, Illinois, Washington, DC, Virginia, Siberia, Florida, Delaware, Missouri, Kansas, New York, Oregon, Georgia, Argentina, Minisota, and so many more...

Tonight in Second Life they were having an in-world indexing party...at the 'Just Genealogy' firepit, they are an awesome and dedicated group of genealogists!

The end result of all this hard work will be shown as more and more states are released completely indexed!

As of June 29th there were 29 states that have searchable indexes:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming. Looking at the 'Overall Progress" chart it shows 78.03 % which is truely amazing!

According to their Facebook page they will publish the full totals tomorrow and perhaps release more completed states...

When it comes to occupations, there are many different ones that individuals have had over time. The census records show such a variety of occupations that often one may have to look it up to determine just what that occupation entailed as it was to support their families. Yet there are some occupations that are still the same today as they have always been throughout time.

In the above picture an individual bakes bread in a brick oven which is done today in various places throughout the world. In researching my Marotte lines, my grandfather, Alphonse Marotte, worked for the New England Bakery in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In my immediate family, my son, Phillip works as a cook at the Waterman Grille in Providence, Rhode Island and has worked at other restaurants over the years.
His brother is also a fantastic cook and on their paternal side there are even more bakers and cooks. It is easy to see how some talents just continue on through the generations.

Not to be outdone, my furthest back ancestor, Rene Brisson was a butcher, however, again perusing the census records back finds more butchers and so this skill is another that has been handed down to the current generations as they learn to cook and gain their culinary skills which includes knowing how to chop, puree, dice, slice, etc. to get all the ingredients just right!

Agricultural laborers and farmers are another of the more common occupations found but within those parameters are many more occupations that includes thresher, swainer, granger and ackerman, etc. These different terms add so much color and imagination to our search as we attempt to visualize what they might be and then adding a picture of our ancestor doing that particular job, ancestral research often provides an unexpected historical perspective not found in history books.

Often when there are individuals with the same family names in the same locations, an occupation can be the one thing that tells them apart. Just in this little portion of an 1881 UK Census we find seven different occupations or professions for these individuals.

As one does research, it is a good thing to become familiar with the trades, occupations and professions of those in your ancestral lines. There are many great sites to help with understanding the old terminologies by different countries as I've written about here.

Regardless of what occupation has been passed down through the generations, one thing is certain, everyone one tried their best to support their families and while some focused on a trade others did whatever work was available at the time.

Earlier this year the opportunity to assist in indexing the 1940 US Census became evident. This resulted in the biggest recruitment effort ever taken to involve the community with this massive task. Over 132 million people were living in just the 48 Continental states in 1940 and more than 3.8 million pages. Additionally, a number of major companies partnered with this great endeavor, Archives, FindMyPast, ProQuest and the National Archives and an overwhelming number of Societies and individuals are currently working hard to complete this fantastic resource in record time. To all who doing just that we in the research community say a big Thank You as we have now passed the half way point!

A new community effort is slowly being launched to provide research services to those who need it through Facebook Genealogical Research Communities. At this time, there are more than 100 genealogy research communities established on Facebook answering every kind of genealogical question imaginable. Some are purely directional as to what to do next or where to go next and others are a little more involved. The FamilySearch Research Wiki is a great resource to many of these individuals. Others who research in those area are also providing answers and it is another valuable show of support from the awesome genealogical community.

Pages exists for each of the US states along with several countries and ethnic groups. Each page is managed by a research team of FamilySearch volunteers from around the world and is designed to answer research questions and point individuals in the right direction to continue on with their own research. The world areas covered are:

Africa

Asia

Ethnic Research Communities

Europe

Latin America

North America

Oceania

One can post a question or answer a question, either way, a community in action is what will be seen by all who participate in these community efforts! It is truely another amazing opportunity where the community shines again and pays it forward to all.

Today on Facebook, one of my colleagues, Sheri Bush sent out a request to encourage her genealogical friends to consider adoping a county website referring to these 'Genealogical Research Communities' so that more aid can be provided throughout the world. The early beta testing has shown that these communities do provide a great resource to many who may not be able to find help at a Family History Center or are just beginning to do research.

For those who may be interested in helping out, there is a lot of information on the FamilySearch Research Wiki's Adminstrators page. There is also a Facebook Admins page, both provide great assistance to all. One should check it out and take it into consideration as another opportunity to be part of a constantly growing genealogical community!

There are no words that really can express the depth of gratitude felt by those who are left behind and can enjoy the freedoms we do because an individual gave his or her life for us and yet each year we try on Memorial Day to do just that.

All over the United States there are cemeteries covered in flags and flowers in rememberence of all who have died for this country, the numbers are staggering of those who have done this for all of us.

Genealogists and family historians often record their deaths with tears in their eyes as they think of all that could have been for that individual and yet we are years away from the actual events and so it is no wonder what their immediate loved ones must have felt and gone through at that time, it is indeed a sad and solemn reference that is given to all of these brave individuals and their immediate families.

There are many online resources to help us find out more about these individuals today then there were many years ago for the survivors who may have never really known what happened to their loved one. A website has been set up totally dedicated to Memorial Day. This site explains the history behind the day along with a listing of another 16 sites also dedicated to this day. There are many other interesting and valuable links on tihis site worth reviewing.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has a veterans burial locater which can help to locate where a specific soldier is buried. The Amercan Battle Monuments Commission has a listing for WW1, WWII and the Korean War. There is a National Grave Registration Project sponsored by the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War which provides a database of all the final resting places of all Union Civil War Veterans.

Fold3 provides an alphabetical list of Revolutionary Soldiers from 1775-1783. along with many other collections and claim to be the "web's premier collection of original miliary records."

Of course Ancestry.com has a very large collection of military records also and do need to be mentioned for making some many of the military records available online from the first entries of the WW1 draft records many years ago.

The National Archives is where one goes to attain copies of service records and many other military resources. Most states military records can be located through the USGenWeb sites. Some states also have memorial sites set up for their fallen heroes.

While I have cousins and relatives who have fought for the US, most of my ancestors fought from the Canadian borders and were Carignan Soldiers. When doing research there were many references to many being members. Their history is worth reading about, Dick Eastman wrote an excellent article on these individuals entitled Carignan Soldiers or Soldat Carignan.

There are many other memorial sites to war veterans from around the world, I especially appreciate the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site which is a massive database from many wars and provides burial locations. Not to be outdone, there are many others from other countries too. Here are a few:

Australian War Graves Photogravic Archive
Norwegian War Graves
Polish War Graves
South Africa War Graves Project
War Graves and Memorials in New Zealand

In closing all one can say is 'Thank You' and may the families of those who have given all be blessed with all they need at this time.
The genealogical community rocks!

The hard work of so many to get the US 1940 Census indexed is just a tip of the iceberg when it comes to the commitment of so many. The report out just yesterday on this one project was staggering. They have added 3 more states to the list of completed states with searchable indexes. Acording to the article more than 43% has been indexed and arbitrated, I do believe we are making indexing history! The full list of statistics is located within the article.

Beyond the statistics are those who are working so hard to help out, we say thank you! Our map is looking so colorful...

In addition to these awesome statistics, the indexding community continues to help in other areas too. The list of newly complted projects includes Brasil, Rio de Janeiro, Italia, Napoli, UK, England and Wales, and Canada. These records will soon be on FamilySearch.org.

Lastly, new records just added to FamilySearch.org come from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands, Italy, Peru, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela and Wales!

These records are sure to aid many in their genealogical research, check them out and happy hunting!
There are many different e-newspapers out there to read, it is just a matter of using a search engine to see what one can find.

I see this as a great tool for society newsletters or someone who has the time to publish daily and expand from a blog like this to a newspaper.

Enjoy this new opportunity to finally be the publisher you've always wanted to be and notice all those who appreciate the efforts you make as bring fresh new news to your readers!
As individuals work together to bring the Indexed 1940 US Census online, it has become very evident that many wonderful individuals are working very hard to bring this to reality sooner rather than later!

Today's announcement of "6"states up online, indexed and easily searchable is now a great resource for those whose families were living in Delaware, Colorado, Kansas, Oregon, Virgina and New Hampshire! This is truely amazing and is all from the efforts of more than 100,000 volunteers nationwide.

According to the release today, more than 45 million records have been indexed, another astonding fact in the race to completely make these records available to all who need them. There is always room for more indexers and one can sign up by going to this 1940 link. So how is our color coded United States looking now?

Slowly this map is filling in and it shouldn't be long till another large group are added to the current 6 that are now fully indexed. Checking out the 'State by State' break down, one can easily see the progress of their state. My home state is at 31% which to me is fantastic.

Family Historians and genealogists are usually very tech savy and take advantage of online databases, online resources and all possible ways to locate their ancestral families.

One of the many ways is to reach out through 3rd party websites that help to match those who submit their genealogical databases to other databases on their site. Once a match is found, the website informs each of the parties that there is a possible match between those two individuals.

The concept is a great one and I myself have discovered many new 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on cousins from around the world. Early on, RootsWeb was the place to upload a gedcom file to put a family database online, however, one had to do the searching to find the connections to others

One of the early adapters to this concept of matching databases was OneGreatFamily which began back in 2000. At that time there were just a few other commercial companies trying to help individuals link with other individuals by comparing their genealogical databases.

Fast forward to 2012 and there are many sites that now aid this great endeavor, however, unless you are willing to use their online interface as your main and only database you run into problems of outdated files and lose the connections that have been made from those outdated databases. While I enjoy making connections, I still want to have my own database on my own PC and don't wish to keep it all online.

Today, there are many genealogical community databases, each one is able to assist those that belong to their community and are able to assist one another with genealogical research. Ancestry.com puts little green leaves when connections are made, MyHeritage.com sends emails of connections as well as GenesReunited which acts as the middle man and a notice through emails. OneGreatFamily attaches an icon to the place where additional information can be added and there are many others that follow a similar pattern.

My thoughts are that there ought to be a way to update the original gedcom file without having to remove it and re-upload a new gedcom which becomes outdated the next time you add to your database, perhaps someone will be able to figure out a way to do just that so those who don't wish to use the online system 100% can do so. Hopefully the wait for a solution is not far away...
